GUWAHATI: The lack of medicines and ambulance made the locals of a Manipur village take a patient to a hospital in Myanmar in the bucket of an excavator. He died on the way.

There is a primary health centre at Sehlon, 2 km away from 40-year-old Thangtinlen Baite’s village New Gamnom, but due to lack of medicines and staff, his family was forced to take him to the Khampat hospital, 20 km away in Myanmar, in a JCB (excavator).

The incident was reported from the remote Khengjoi sub-division in Chandel district where the roads were especially bad. Locals said Baite died due to the bumpy ride in the excavator. Khengjoi is one of Manipur’s most backward sub-divisions.

Over the years, there have been allegations of disparity in Manipur government’s development initiatives. The tribals, who live in the hills, feel that development takes place only in the Imphal Valley where the non-tribals are in a large majority.

After the installation of the BJP-led coalition government in the state in March this year, chief minister N Biren Singh had asserted that all regions of Manipur would grow equally.

The Thadou Students’ Association said Baite’s death was a testimony to the lack of basic infrastructures and healthcare services in the hill districts.

“He died because there was no road or healthcare service available. A damaged bridge forced him to take the ride in an excavator,” the Association said.

The state’s health minister L Jayantakumar Singh was not available for comments. Calls made to him went unanswered.
