Sports Illustrated: Florida QB Malik Zaire will be an impact transfer - World News

Welcome to another installment of Good Morning, Gators, SEC Country’s daily morning column covering Florida athletics with beat writer Jordan McPherson. Here’s a look at what you might have missed over the weekend.

Given the chance, Malik Zaire produces, SI says

Sports Illustrated’s Joan Niesen on Friday put out a list of the top 10 college football transfers who will make an impact this season. Malik Zaire, the graduate transfer quarterback from Notre Dame who is expected by many to be the Gators’ starting quarterback, made the list. Niesen’s explanation:

“Zaire, the former Notre Dame quarterback, hasn’t played since September 2015, and it took until June for him to solidify Gainesville as his official 2017 landing spot. The SEC had to amend a rule about graduate transfers to get him to Florida, but now that he’s there, the former Irish standout may be what Jim McElwain needs to get his team over the hump in the SEC.

Zaire’s playing time has been limited thus far, though every time he’s gotten a chance in the spotlight, he’s played well. He made just three starts for Notre Dame, in the Music City Bowl after the 2014 season and early in ’15 before he broke his leg. From there, DeShone Kizer won the job and kept it through ’16. Overall, Zaire has completed 58.2 percent of his passes for 816 yards and 6 touchdowns and has never thrown an interception in his college career.”

The SEC media picked the Gators to finish second in the SEC East and tabbed nine Gators to the preseason All-SEC team. Despite the consensus from the media, SEC Network analyst Greg McElroy gave the Gators the edge in the East over Georgia because of one key area on the offense (and no, it’s not quarterback).

A Tim Tebow call-up is unlikely

According to ESPN, New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said the possibility of Tim Tebow being called up in September “never crossed my mind until … somebody said it was likely to happen.” Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, saw his 12-game hit streak snapped on Saturday. During that streak, Tebow posted a .300 batting average with 2 home runs, 9 RBI and 6 runs scored.

High praise for Brady Singer

“With the first pick of the 2018 MLB Draft, the [insert team here] selects Brady Singer, a right-handed pitcher from Florida.” According to Baseball America, this statement could very well be heard as Singer is the site’s top college prospect heading into the 2018 season. The scouting report on Singer:

“Singer pairs electric fastball life with a slider he locates effectively. He struck out 129 batters in 126 innings.”

In other Florida baseball news:

The Boston Red Sox on Sunday called up relief pitcher Austin Maddox, who threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings in the first game of a doubleheader against the New York Yankees.
