Lane Kiffin responds to Nick Saban’s comments on Jalen Hurts - World News

Former Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin responded to Nick Saban’s jab about his protecting of quarterback Jalen Hurts with a telling quote on the Opening Drive.

.@Lane_Kiffin: "Did we protect Hurts? I don't know. Last time I checked the job was to win games. He was SEC offensive player of the year."

Hurts passed for 2,780 yards and 23 touchdowns in his freshman campaign.

Kiffin’s quote was in response to this comment by Saban on Wednesday.

“I think we protected him a little bit last year and it didn’t enhance his development,” Saban told The Opening Drive. “And sometimes later in the year when people played us in a way that we needed to be able to throw the ball, we may not have been as efficient as we would have liked to have been. That was probably our fault as coaches because we protected him instead of developing him as a young player. The goal this spring, and certainly before next season, is that we can create more balance by being a better passing team to go along with what we’re able to do with our feet as a quarterback. As well as how that creates balance for our overall offense and utilizes some of the other skill players that we have which we didn’t always take advantage of last year.”

The war of words between the two was ignited when Kiffin explained his approach as the new head coach at Florida Atlantic by saying “I’m not really big on humiliating the assistant coaches in front of everybody.”

As more information becomes available, it’s clear that the relationship between Saban and Kiffin was fractured, which made it best for both parties to move on for a fresh start.

Meanwhile, Kiffin also raved about former five-star quarterback prospect Tua Tagovailoa who is vying with Hurts for the starting job, comparing him to a Super Bowl champion.

.@Lane_Kiffin: "Tua is a phenomenal talent. I wrote him up as Steve Young-like in how he plays and his release."

That’s some lofty praise from Kiffin but not surprising given the time he spent recruiting the 6-foot-1 dual-threat signal caller.
