“South Carolina landed the 4-star quarterback over North Carolina State. Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Oregon were among the offers for Joyner, who competed earlier this month in the Elite 11 finals,” SEC Country’s Hale McGranahan reported. “The announcement was made in honor of his late father, Damond Alton Joyner.”

What they’re saying about Dakereon Joyner’s commitment

South Carolina fans and national media alike were abuzz on Twitter on Sunday afternoon following Joyner’s commitment …

Just wait until Joyner starts recruiting for the #Gamecocks too. He's a true leader, very vocal. Will be a tremendous Ambassador. #SpursUp

They may not be on the same field yet, but plenty of Joyner’s future teammates are already fans of the quarterback.

“His leadership skills and the chemistry that he has, he’ll be your friend on and off the field, somebody that you can connect with. … I mean, he’s just a respectable dude,” said 3-star safety and fellow commit R.J. Roderick. “He’s real cool and real down to earth as well.”

Who’s next?

Joyner already has his sights set on two major targets for the Gamecocks in the Class of 2018 …

“One, I’m going to get Xavier Thomas to flip,” Joyner said, via The State. “I’m going to try to get him, Stephon Wynn, just everybody on board.”

Top tight end target

With 2018 TE Gavin Schoenwald committing to Vanderbilt last week, fellow 2018 TE Tommy Tremble‘s become an even bigger priority for South Carolina.

“I really loved the campus and the coaching staff.  They said that I would be a dynamic player on the line and when spread out as well,” Tremble told Phil Kornblut following his visit to Columbia on Friday.

Clemson coach on South Carolina baseball opening

Current Clemson head baseball coach and former South Carolina assistant Monte Lee has not heard from USC AD Ray Tanner about the vacant position, he told reporters on Friday.

“I don’t anticipate going anywhere anytime soon,” Lee said. “If Clemson’s going to have me as the head coach, this is where I want to be.”

Tyler Johnson signs

South Carolina RHP Tyler Johnson announced on Sunday that he’ll be officially joining the Chicago White Sox organization. Only a junior, Johnson could have elected to return to school, but as a top-150 pick in the draft, significantly improving his stock was unlikely.
